The Roaring Forties

Cook Strait, that separates islands in the North
From those are of New Zealand in the South,
Having waters of the most precarious activities
Where build high waves, the Roaring Forties.
These westerly winds in the Southern Hemisphere
In the latitudes of forty and fifty degrees roar severe,
Offered a big aid, the blows of perilous diversities
To the ships sailing from Europe to the East Indies.
The boundaries of the gales are not consistent
Shift north or south on season's freaks of different,
In far south, similar but stronger than the Forties
Are the Furious Fifties and the Shrieking Sixties.
Below forty degrees south law and order fail
And off fifty degrees south stormy waves entail,
An old sailor felt likely, 'There is none to control
The waves inflate six-story building size to roll.'
Landmasses of North America, Europe and Asia
Hinder to pack winds in the hypothetical Laurasia,
Whereas due to lack of huge compact landed area
Can hit South America, New Zealand and Australia. 20
